(POST 9) I've Watched a New Film
What had you ever heard of this film before?
Before watching the film I had never heard anything about it or watched the trailer. I also had never seen any kind of advertisement or merchandise relating to the film.
What is Hot Rod?
Hot Rod is a 2007 American comedy film co-written, directed by, and starring members of The Lonely Island (Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer). The film stars Samberg as amateur stuntman Rod Kimble, whose abusive step-father, Frank (Ian McShane) continuously mocks and disrespects him. When Frank grows ill, Rod raises money for his heart operation by executing his largest stunt yet. In addition to raising money for the operation, he also does so to win Frank's respect, by kicking his butt. The film also stars Taccone, Sissy Spacek, Will Arnett, Danny McBride, Isla Fisher and Bill Hader. It was directed by Schaffer (in his directorial debut) and distributed by Paramount Pictures.
The film was originally drafted by Pam Brady (who retains full writing credit) as a vehicle for Saturday Night Live star Will Ferrell, but the project never commenced. Lorne Michaels convinced Paramount to let The Lonely Island, who were growing famous for their work on SNL, take over the film. The group subsequently re-wrote the film with a heavy emphasis on offbeat surreal humour. The film was shot in Vancouver over the summer of 2006. The film's soundtrack was composed by ex-Yes guitarist, Trevor Rabin, and the film features several songs by the Swedish rock band Europe.
Hot Rod opened on August 3, 2007 and was a box office failure, grossing only $14 million of its $25 million budget. As the film's producers predicted, it received mixed reviews, with critics criticizing the film's script and humour.
What was good?
Despite reviews of the film being negative I found the film hilarious. The storyline shared the young boys dream to follow in the foot steps of a legend and he achieves his dream through sacrifice and pain. The relationship between him and his Dad is different to most normal ones but he manages to pay for his life saving surgery through his dare devil jump that goes wrong. Personally I really enjoyed the film where as others may not have.
What was bad?
In my opinion I enjoyed the whole of the film. I was really happy with watching the film and couldn'tbelieve that the reviews were so poor after watching the entire film.
What did you enjoy?
Its been a while that i have come across a comedy movie as light hearted as this one. I think this movie caters to all genres of audience and the best part is that you don't have to drag the movie storyline home and ponder over it.Its got a feel-good attitude to it and has got a simple storyline. I recommend this movie to one and all. A great release of 2007! The directors done a good job and so have the actors.. haven't heard of them before but if its their debut, then well done ! The soundtrack is a mix of techno and 80s music which again adds a brilliant touch to the movie and they are very situational, which does not happen in most of the comedy movies.
Anything you would like to use as stimulus/ ideas for your music video?
I don't think including anything from this film would be suitable for our music video idea. The genre of film is very much different to the idea with have for the music video so the link isn't really there to have.
Would you recommend the film to anyone else?
Yes I would, I would recommend this film to everyone who wants to see a comedy film that will make them laugh all the way throughout. Even though the Dad has a horrible illness his relationship with his son is a hysterical factor to the success of the movie.
